SHORELINE MANAGEMENT
The Smith Mountain Project, including Smith Mountain and Leesville Lakes, is an important part of the local landscape and surrounding communities. It is also home for thousands of people and a scenic recreation destination for those who enjoy fishing, boating, and water sports. The project provides clean energy, drinking water, and a habitat for fish and wildlife, as well as serving as an economic driver for the area.
The lakes and surrounding areas need protection to maintain the project's ecosystem and continue to provide a sense of beauty, peace, and enjoyment for all. As licensee, Appalachian Power is required to develop a shoreline management plan that ensures protection and enhancement of the project's resources. With significant, valuable input from the community, this plan was last updated and approved by the Federal Regulatory Commission (FERC) in 2014.
Together, we can protect this valuable community for all to enjoy.
